About Maki-e Lacquerware
Maki-e is a decorative lacquerware technique in which gold, silver, or metallic powders are sprinkled onto wet lacquer to form intricate motifs. Developed in Japan over 1,000 years ago, it is considered one of the most refined expressions of urushi art, requiring extraordinary skill and patience.

Cultural Significance of the Motifs

  • Matsu (pine): Symbol of longevity and steadfastness, as the pine remains green year-round.

  • Take (bamboo): Represents resilience and flexibility, bending without breaking.

  • Ume (plum blossom): A flower that blooms in late winter, symbolizing renewal, vitality, and perseverance.

  • Ineho (rice ears): Associated with fertility, harvest, and abundance.

Together, these motifs form a traditional shōchikubai (pine, bamboo, plum) composition, enriched with rice ears to further express prosperity and blessings, making the bowl highly auspicious.

Notes:

  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, moisture, or extreme temperatures to preserve lacquer and maki-e.

  • Not suitable for dishwashers or microwaves; wipe gently with a soft cloth after use.

  • As a handcrafted piece, slight variations in motif or finish reflect its uniqueness and authenticity.
